For pharmaceutical shippers, choosing a transportation solution involves more than identifying a route to market. The equipment must meet the cargo’s temperature requirements, handling arrangements must be carefully coordinated, and shipment information must support the customer’s quality processes.

Ocean Network Express (ONE) brings together specialized reefer equipment, global ocean services and CONTAINER+ digital monitoring to address these requirements. An integrated rail and ocean solution for a pharmaceutical exporter in India demonstrates this approach in practice.

From Customer Requirements to Validation

A pharmaceutical exporter evaluating an intermodal route from Hyderabad through Nhava Sheva needed to assess the solution against its established quality assurance requirements. A key consideration was the ability to monitor shipment conditions during the inland journey before the cargo connected with ONE’s ocean network.

ONE collaborated with the customer’s Quality Assurance team, providing a reefer container equipped with CONTAINER+ for validation before commercial deployment.

The trial enabled the customer to evaluate CONTAINER+’s near-real-time shipment information as part of its own assessment process. Following successful validation, the customer approved the intermodal transportation solution and adopted CONTAINER+ for its Trans-Pacific pharmaceutical export shipments.

For the customer, the evaluation provided a basis for assessing both the transportation arrangements and the information available to oversee the shipment. The project illustrates how ONE works with pharmaceutical customers to address their specific quality requirements.

Preparing for Temperature-Sensitive Cargo

Careful equipment preparation and shipment coordination underpin ONE’s pharmaceutical transportation services.

ONE offers reefer transportation for cargo requiring frozen, refrigerated and controlled ambient conditions. Comprehensive Pre-Trip Inspections check essential reefer components before deployment, while experienced teams coordinate transportation requirements with customers. During the shipment, 24/7 reefer technical support provides access to assistance when required.

These operational measures help maintain appropriate transportation conditions throughout the cargo’s journey with ONE.

Information for Transit and Quality Reviews

CONTAINER+ adds visibility to this process by providing access to information including supply- and return-air temperatures, location and reefer power status. Customers can use these insights to follow transportation conditions and inform coordination when further attention is needed.

The value extends beyond transit. Historical voyage information can contribute to post-shipment quality reviews and, alongside customers’ own monitoring and documentation, support traceability and their Good Distribution Practice (GDP) requirements.

The Hyderabad project demonstrates how this information can also assist customers when evaluating a transportation solution before adoption.
